School of Science

The School of Science provides a high quality and challenging education for exceptional undergraduate students, offering studies in the sciences as well as interdisciplinary fields. Students interact with outstanding teacher-scholars as instructors, advisors, and mentors, and have access to modern, well-equipped facilities for hands-on experiences. Faculty members integrate comprehensive undergraduate research experiences into their scholarship, actively preparing students to meet future career or graduate school goals. An array of support programs is designed to provide any student with a desire to study in the School of Science the opportunity to succeed. The liberal arts setting of the College and the balance of theory and practice in the School prepare each student for lifelong learning and for contributing to the field and to society at large.


Department of Biology

The TCNJ Department of Biology promotes a culture of intellectual engagement centered on the life sciences, shared by a community of undergraduate students, faculty, staff, and alumni. The faculty members are teacher-scholars who are dedicated to excellence in teaching and are deeply engaged in the production of new knowledge. Utilizing modern pedagogy in the classroom and collaboration between students and faculty in research, we instill in all students a sense of scientific inquiry that employs a systematic and empirical approach to answering questions about the natural world, from molecules to organisms to ecosystems. We strive to challenge students and to foster critical thinking. By developing intellectual ability, technical knowledge, communication skills, and ethical standards for practicing modern science, we prepare students to excel in a diverse array of careers and to become informed and engaged citizens.


Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry at The College of New Jersey strives to create and maintain an environment for both students and faculty to advance their understanding of chemistry by:  (a) providing a dynamic and rigorous curriculum as outlined by the American Chemical Society Committee on Professional Training that serves not only Chemistry majors and majors in related disciplines, but reaches out to all students interested in a well-rounded liberal arts education through the acknowledgement of the different goals of a diverse student population, (b) offering interrelated courses in a variety of sub-disciplines that promote flexibility in degree planning and access to a wide variety of learning opportunities, (c) participating in the process of scientific discovery by encouraging students to engage in scholarly endeavors with the faculty through independent research, (d) cultivating and maintaining an environment conducive for the faculty to develop and grow as teacher-scholars, and (e) seeking out and establishing connections among broader scientific and educational communities as both recipients and disseminators of scientific knowledge. As the result of these activities, The Department of Chemistry at TCNJ strives to be known as one of the top undergraduate programs both in the United States and internationally by integrating teaching and research.


Department of Computer Science

The College of New Jersey Department of Computer Science aims to become one of the leading undergraduate research programs. Through a comprehensive learning environment, perseverance in developing a community of researchers, and an extensive curriculum, our department is dedicated to enhancing our world’s knowledge of Computer Science and its applications. The department strives to educate and assist each student personally through their undergraduate years. Each course offered is always taught by faculty members and has a class size average of less than 30 students. Faculty members act as teacher-scholars assuming the roles of class instructors, research mentors, academic advisors, and coordinators of Computer Science related extra-curricular activities.  The practical experience is an essential component of the Computer Science Program. Undergraduate students are required to participate in at least one of the capstone experiences comprising of one semester mentor research with a selected faculty or an academically approved internship. This provides students with an opportunity to work one-on-one with a faculty member on a research problem within the realm of their expertise or gain experience in solving real-world problems in an industry environment. Ongoing faculty projects include but are not limited to: mobile computing; game theory, design and development; social computing; website development and multimedia design; grid computing; computer and network security; expert system design; computer vision; human-language technologies. 

Our undergraduate Computer Science program is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), a professional accrediting organization.


Department of Mathematics and Statistics

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is a vibrant community of undergraduate students, faculty, and staff that promotes a culture of intellectual engagement in mathematics and statistics. The faculty members are teacher-scholars dedicated to excellence in teaching and deeply engaged in the production and dissemination of current disciplinary knowledge. Faculty members share their knowledge with students and offer students experiences that instill a sense of intellectual inquiry.

As a liberal arts department we nurture an understanding of mathematical and statistical thought and develop our students’ ability to use and communicate mathematics and statistics. Graduates of our department have gained the problem solving, critical thinking and technological skills needed for advanced degree programs and for leadership in careers in industry, government, and education. Our courses provide students throughout the School of Science the necessary mathematical background for their disciplines. Our broader liberal arts offerings give all TCNJ students the quantitative and logical reasoning abilities required for informed citizenship and for careers in the 21st century.


Department of Physics

The TCNJ Department of Physics promotes a culture of intellectual engagement centered on the natural sciences.  This culture is shared by a community of undergraduate students, faculty, staff and alumni.  The faculty members are teacher-scholars who are dedicated to excellence in teaching and are deeply engaged in the production and dissemination of new knowledge.  Using modern pedagogy in the classroom and collaborations between students and faculty in research, it is the goal of the faculty to instill in all students a sense of scientific inquiry that employs systematic, experimental, mathematical and computational approaches to answering questions about the natural world.  The current community of faculty and students study phenomena on scales ranging from nanometers to the size of the universe. They conduct research in materials science, optics, atmospheric science, biophysics, physics education, seismology, astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology.  Through these endeavors the faculty members strive to challenge students and to foster critical thinking.  By developing intellectual ability, technical knowledge, quantitative reasoning, logical thinking, communications skills and ethical standards for practicing modern science, the ultimate mission of the faculty is to prepare students to excel in a very wide array of careers and to be informed and engaged citizens.
